Painting on Tarp, WandelWerk Cologne

Liberated pigs on construction fence tarpaulin // WandelWerk Cologne shows paintings by Hartmut Kiewert in window

From February 24. 2021, two large-format paintings by Leipzig artist Hartmut Kiewert will be on display in the window of WandelWerk Cologne. Painted in oil on construction fence tarpaulin, the works show pigs escaping from fattening facilities and animal transporters.

“Both climate heating and the Corona pandemic are the result of vast destruction of nature and exploitation of other animals. We need a socio-ecological shift toward a radically different relationship with nature and other animals. As counter-images to the animal industry, a human-animal relationship on equal footing appears in my imagery,” Kiewert says about his works.

The idea to show art under the conditions of the Lockdown in shop windows had Thomas Grusch of the initiative Rhine vegan. With the idea, he met with enthusiasm from both the artist and the organizers of WandelWerk.

WandelWerk is a center for social-ecological transformation in Cologne. Civil society engagement, alternative economic activity, creative development and social encounters merge in this place and are translated into forward-looking concepts.

The initiative RheinVegan campaigns for vegan life and animal rights in the Rhineland and elsewhere.

“The position that non-human animals occupy in our cultural imagination is proof for how easy it is to accept the lower status of some beings without even a second thought.”
