MULTISPECIES FUTURES* / Christel Wagner Galerie, Frankfurt

From 9 May to 31 August 2025, the Christel Wagner Galerie in Frankfurt / Main will be showing my next solo exhibition MULTISPECIES FUTURES*.

In Hartmut Kiewert’s pictorial worlds, the human-animal relationship is no longer characterized by objectification and exploitation, but by empathy and solidarity. Cows and pigs freed from fattening facilities and slaughterhouses conquer the crumbling streets or spend an afternoon on the beach together with humans. The animal industry is ruined and fishing trawlers are nothing but wrecks on the coast and at the bottom of the sea. In the tension between collapse and utopia, flooded fast food restaurants become new habitats for fish and other marine animals. Beyond the constraints of exploitation, a possible multispecies future emerges in Kiewert’s paintings.

“The position that non-human animals occupy in our cultural imagination is proof for how easy it is to accept the lower status of some beings without even a second thought.”
