Multispecies Futures – Hartmut Kiewert . Roger Löcherbach, Cubus Kunsthalle Duisburg

With the exhibition Multispecies Futures, Cubus Kunsthalle Duisburg continues its thematic series Art in the Anthropocene and shows works by Hartmut Kiewert and Roger Löcherbach, which pose questions about the relationship between humans and animals as a special topic of the future. The massive exploitation of nature and animals is increasingly calling into question the survival of us humans as well, as recent flood and fire disasters around the world have shown. To prevent the worst consequences of the climate crisis, we need to turn away from anthropocentrism and the radical domination of nature that accompanies it. We are not above nature, but part of it and dependent on it. The exhibition Multispecies Futures with paintings by Hartmut Kiwert and sculptures by Roger Löcherbach explores how we can re-locate ourselves within all living things and find a careful and respectful way of dealing with our fellow world and our fellow creatures. Multispecies Futures invites us to reflect on the interconnectedness of all living things and to set out on the path to a future in which all species are taken into account and in which we meet them on an equal footing.

“The position that non-human animals occupy in our cultural imagination is proof for how easy it is to accept the lower status of some beings without even a second thought.”
