ZUsammenKUNFT DER SPEZIES / Mannheimer Kunstverein

From September 6 to October 18, 2026, the Mannheimer Kunstverein will host my next major institutional solo exhibition, “Hartmut Kiewert –
ZUsammenKUNFT DER SPEZIES.” Jessica Ullrich will speak at the opening on September 6. There will be a small supporting program, and a comprehensive catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition.

“Art can help us better understand our world. Figurative painting, in particular, shows how we humans see and experience things. It takes its time—and invites us, too, to look more slowly. The paintings by Hartmut Kiewert are composed in a calm and clear manner. They do not come across as loud or dramatic. Instead, they unfold their power slowly. The more you look, the more you discover.

The focus is on the coexistence of humans and animals. Both meet on equal footing. Neither is more important than the other. This creates an image of equality and shared existence. Hartmut Kiewert avoids strong emotions or clear-cut narratives. His figures remain calm, almost reserved. It is precisely this that creates a special, peaceful atmosphere.

His philosophy is also reflected in his working methods: He lives a vegan lifestyle and uses no animal-derived materials. For him, art and life belong together. The exhibition at the Mannheimer Kunstverein invites visitors to look closely—and to rethink their own view of the world.”

“The position that non-human animals occupy in our cultural imagination is proof for how easy it is to accept the lower status of some beings without even a second thought.”
