HELLO NATURE / GNM, Nürnberg

From October 3, 2024 to March 2, 2025, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nuremberg will host the exhibition “HELLO NATURE. How do we want to live together?”, which explores the relationship between humans and nature. Among many other historical and contemporary works, my painting “Share II” (2024, oil on canvas, 120 x 150 cm) will be shown and juxtaposed with the painting “Shepherd with herd of goats” (1690/1700, oil on canvas, 107 x 150 cm) by Rosa da Tivoli.

Hartmut Kiewert, “Share II”, 2024, oil on canvas, 120 x 150 cm

“The exhibition “Hello Nature” sheds light on the complex relationship between man and nature. It asks what happens when people see themselves as the center of the world and try to dominate nature. It shows the history of this relationship, which is characterized by exploitation, threats and efforts to preserve it. At the same time, the exhibition poses the question of future possibilities for coexistence.

The presentation is divided into three large chapters that span an arc from the settling down period to the present day. It shows how the interactions between people and their environment have led to profound changes.

The first chapter sheds light on the long history of the appropriation and exploitation of nature by humans. The second chapter discusses the agency of nature and emphasizes the realization that humans cannot completely control nature. The third chapter is dedicated to new approaches and narratives that seek to overcome the opposition between nature and culture.

It asks what perspectives can be developed to overcome the current ecological crisis. It also examines how a look at history can help us to meet the major challenges of the present.”

“The position that non-human animals occupy in our cultural imagination is proof for how easy it is to accept the lower status of some beings without even a second thought.”
